Medical speciality responsible for the overall female reproductive health.

Gynaecology refers to the medical and surgical speciality that deals with diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system (uterus, vagina and ovaries). Obstetrics, on the other hand, refers to pregnancy, birth and postnatal care, also encompassing the psychological and social aspects of maternity.

Gynaecologists specialise in diagnosing and treating symptoms associated with diseases and disorders such as:

• Cancer and pre-cancerous conditions of the reproductive organs.
• Urinary incontinence.
• Amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods).
• Dysmenorrhoea (painful menstrual periods).
• Infertility
• Menorrhagia (abnormally heavy menstrual periods): symptom that often leads to a hysterectomy.
• Prolapsed pelvic organs.
